Gregory Call Obituary

Gregory L. "Charlie Mitchell" Call, 65, of Hanover Township, Washington County, passed away peacefully with his family by his side, on Tuesday, February 21, 2023, after suffering a massive heart attack on February 9, 2023. He was born in Butler, PA, and lived in several places over the years, including Detroit, Chicago, Niagara Falls, Canada, and Guilford, VT near Brattleboro, VT, where he graduated from Brattleboro Union High School in 1974. He was the beloved husband of 40 years to Janet Winslow Call, whom he met
while attending The King’s College in Briarcliff Manor, NY; loving father of David and Jonathan (Sadie) Call; grandfather of Kinsley Call; brother of Laura L. (Bill Shafer) Call; uncle of Joy O. Young; brother-in-law of Paul (Kaye Salter) Winslow. Greg was preceded in death by his parents, William R. and Charlotte Whipple Call; and sister, Sharon L. Young. Greg’s faith in Christ was evident to all who met him. He sang bass in the choir at Allegheny Center Alliance Church for over 30 years where so many commented about how much they enjoyed seeing him worship. He was truly a joyful worshipper! Greg was also well-known as Charlie Mitchell, a Pittsburgh Radio personality for over 30 years. His career in radio began at 16, inspired by the Disc Jockeys he heard at night on Buffalo radio station WKBW. He worked for several radio stations in the northeast, Ohio Valley, and Pittsburgh areas:
 WKVT Brattleboro VT
 WKBK Keene NH
 WCFR Springfield, VT
 WKFM Fulton NY
 WOKW OK100 Cortland NY
 WKRT Cortland NY
 WEIR Weirton WV
 WOVK Wheeling WV
 WWVA Wheeling WV
 WDSY Pittsburgh PA
Charlie was the voice of Jamboree in the Hills for almost 30 years and had been a host for the Saturday night Jamboree USA show in Wheeling WV and had been the music director at WOVK. His time in radio granted him the fortunate opportunity to meet and know many country music artists, as well as many industry professionals. Beyond radio, he was also known for being a walking encyclopedia of popular music knowledge and cars, as well as having a talent for art. Before going to college, he spent a couple of years as an architectural draftsman designing spiral staircases in Peekskill, NY, and drove school bus in Westchester County during college, in Vermont after college, as well as for Burgettstown School District.
Greg had a passion for ‘57 Chevys, and he and Janet owned one that took them on their honeymoon as well as others that were to be restored. He and his son Jonathan had plans to start the restoration of a 1957 Chevy 210 Handyman wagon – one just brought home from Kentucky in January 2023, with a paint job to match the car from his honeymoon with Janet.
In the last few years, Greg/Charlie fulfilled a dream to build a home studio and was able to become a self-employed Voice--Over artist. He never had to advertise his services, fortunate enough to work primarily with friends and loved ones. He was able to voice and produce commercials for his biggest client and longtime friends at Lionshare Media Services for almost 2 decades, do voice-over work for his church, voice and produce commercials for Pittsburgh Parts-A-Rama, and even co-produce a contemporary weekend radio show called Red
Cup Country with his son David, while still maintaining a part-time gig at WDSY, both of which ended with the pandemic in spring 2020. He felt a sincere calling to serve his community, based on Micah 6:8: “do justice, love mercy, walk humbly with your God” and was asked to join the board at the Hanover Township Sewer Authority where he was chosen to be the chairman, serving until his passing. He also DJ’d the Covered Bridge Car Show in Hanover Township for several years. Relatives and friends will be received from 1 to 3 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, March 2, in Schepner-McDermott Funeral Home,Inc.  165 Noble Avenue, Crafton, PA 15205.
